Fairytale Come True

Santa Barbara bride Raquel Redfield talks to Tinta Latina about her upcoming wedding, life as a model and aspiring actress and what’s it like to bartend at one of the city’s hottest nightclubs.
Unlike most brides just weeks away from their wedding day, Santa Barbara’s Raquel Redfield could not be more relaxed about tying the knot. She oozes calm and confidence and says she can’t wait to exchange vows with fiancée Christopher Dixon. “I want my wedding to be all about celebrating, not about being nervous,” says the 25-year-old Panamanian-American. “It will be such a positive experience for us.”
A model and bartender at Wildcat Lounge, Raquel met Christopher, 32, during an interview in February 2002. “Chris is the manager at Wildcat, and I came in to apply for a job,” she explains. “I knew right away there was something special about him.”
It didn’t take long before the couple started dating. They bought a home together a year ago and got engaged shortly thereafter. “Chris surprised me with his proposal on July 24,” reveals Raquel. “I thought we were having a housewarming party, and then he proposed right there in front of everybody. Not even my family knew he was going to do it that night.”
It’s not unusual for Chris to surprise his fiancée with romantic treats. For their first anniversary, Chris picked Raquel up in a limousine and brought her to Firebird for wine and cheese, on to the Biltmore for cocktails and sunset canoodling and then to Chad’s for dinner. The night ended in a suite at Hotel Mar Monte (formerly the Radisson Hotel). “I’ve never met anyone like Chris. He’s very romantic and always does sweet things for me, like bringing home flowers, wine and cheese platters,” Raquel says.
The daughter of a Panamanian mother and American father, Raquel grew up in Davis, California, speaking mostly Spanish. She even attended several Spanish immersion programs throughout elementary school. “My parents thought it was important for me to learn Spanish,” Raquel says, explaining that these classes usually had less than 30 students who weren’t allowed to speak English with one another. “We were such an outcast. We tried to talk to the other kids at school during breaks, and they would make fun of us.”
After high school, the Latina moved to Santa Barbara to pursue a degree in global studies at UCSB. She has stayed in town since and today works full-time at the Wildcat while pursuing a career in modeling and acting. In fact, Raquel has traveled as far as Fiji for photo shoots and has also starred as a dancer in the comedy “Dodgeball.” “It was amazing to see how funny the actors where and what a great time they had working together,” she says. “I loved it so much I didn’t even mind the 5 a.m. call time.”
Raquel used to work with an agent but says she’s taking a break from castings for now. “Sometimes I wonder if I’m not motivated enough to do it. But then I get jazzed and really want to go for it.” Working in what she herself describes as “an industry of extremes” has not seemed to affect Raquel the way it would most young women. She’s stayed levelheaded and realistic about the future. “Being surrounded by Chris and my family keeps me balanced,” she says, pointing out that no matter what happens with her showbiz career, she’s fully content with whom she is today.
And she still enjoys being a bartender. “You’re working, but you’re still at the party. Sure, you’re selling flirt, which can be hard, but for the most part I like it,” she reveals. The fact that she and Chris work together daily, often spending 20 hours side by side, does not bother Raquel. Rather, she’s happy to find just how much she enjoys being near her fiancée and also at how supportive coworkers are of their relationship. “Chris doesn’t favor me over anyone else, so it works out well,” she says. Looking to the future, the two are hoping to open up a cozy restaurant that can turn into a late night hot spot. “There’s so much money in this town and people do like to stay out late. Still, there are no places to eat after ten o’clock,” says Raquel. “We want to change that.”
Though for now, the couple keeps busy planning their big bash, which will take place at a Montecito estate on July 30. The Enterprise Fish Co is catering the party (as a favor to Raquel), while eight DJs will play an eclectic mix of tunes throughout the evening. “We’ll have one main DJ and seven friends who’ll each play three songs,” Raquel says. “We wanted something different for our wedding, and we also wanted guests to be integrated into the experience.” The couple has opted for nonreligious ceremony, although the bride is adamant about having her father walking her down the aisle. “My whole family is so emotional. The whole Redfield side will be a mess, I’m sure,” she smiles.
As eager as she is to say “I do,” keeping track of all the details for the special day can prove taxing, Raquel admits, particularly as she and Chris are doing most of the planning themselves. “I’m such a mellow person that I don’t like to plan things too far in advance. Luckily, as the manager of a nightclub, Chris is used to coordinating events,” she says, adding jokingly that if she got her way, she may just take on Chris’s last name right this second. “There are times when I make dinner reservations under Mrs. Dixon,” she laughs. “I’m so excited I wish our wedding day was here already.”

Un Cuento de Hadas Hecho Realidad

Raquel Redfield, una hermosa futura novia, habló con Tinta Latina, acerca de su próxima boda, su vida como modelo, aspirante a actriz y su trabajo como “bartender” en uno de los clubes nocturnos más populares de Santa Barbara.
Al contrario de la mayoría de las futuras novias, Raquel Redfield es el retrato de la calma y serenidad y nos dice no poder esperar el momento en que intercambie votos y promesas con su prometido Christopher Dixon. “Yo quiero que mi boda sea una celebración, no un ataque de nervios,” dice la panameña-americana de 25años. “Será una experiencia positiva para nosotros.”
Modelo y “bartender” en el Wildcat Lounge, Raquel conoció a Christopher, de 32 años, durante una entrevista de empleo en febrero del 2002. “Chris es el administrador del Wildcat, y yo llegué para aplicar para un trabajo. Me dí cuenta inmediatamente que él era una persona muy especial,” nos comenta Raquel.
En poco tiempo la pareja comenzo a salir juntos. Luego, compraron una casa y se comprometieron, todo esto hace un año. “Chris me sorprendió, el 24 de julio, al pedirme que fuera su esposa,” revela Raquel. “Yo pensé que la fiesta era para celebrar la compra de nuestra casa. Sin embargo él me propuso matrimonio delante de todos los invitados. Ni mi familia sabía de la sorpresa que se llevarián esa noche.”
Chris acostumbra a sorprender a su prometida de forma romántica. Para su primer aniversario la pareja viajo en limosina. Fueron al Firebird para compartir una botella de vino y deliciosos quesos, de ahí partieron hacia el Hotel Biltmore para tomar unos ricos cocteles y de ahí al restaurante Chad´s para una rica cena. La noche terminó en el Hotel Mar Monte. “Yo nunca había conocido a alguien como Chris. Él es muy romántico, siempre me tráe flores, vinos, quesos,” dice Raquel.
La hija de una panameña y un americano, Raquel se crió en Davis, California, donde siempre habló español. También fue a escuelas donde ofrecían clases de imersión total en español. “Mis padres opinaban que el español era muy importante,” recuerda Raquel, añadiendo que en estas clases había más o menos 30 estudiantes a los que no se les permitía hablar inglés. “Esto nos convertía en indeseables. Nosotros queríamos hablar con otros niños, durante el recreo, pero ellos nos repudiaban y se reían de nosotros.”
Después de graduarse de escuela superior, esta latina se mudo para Santa Barbara, para estudiar una carrera en estudios globales en UCSB. Desde entonces vive aquí y trabaja en el Wildcat a la vez que modela y se desempeña como actriz. El modelaje la ha llevado a lugares tan exóticos como Fiji y la actuación le ha permitido aparecer en películas como “Dodgeball.” “Fue algo increíble el ver lo bien que se llevaban los actores y como se divertían durante el rodaje.” “No me molestaba tener que estar lista a las 5 a.m. para empezar a trabajar.”
Raquel tuvo por un tiempo a un representante, pero está tomando un descanso de su carrera artística. “A veces pienso que me falta motivación para ser actriz. Pero de pronto me animo y quiero seguir adelante.” El trabajar en una industria “de extremos” no parece haber afectado a Raquel. Ella se mantiene equilibrada y muy realista. “Chris y mi familia son mi balanza,” nos dice, enfatizando que no importa lo que suceda con su carrera de actriz, ella se encuentra muy feliz hoy en día.
Disfruta enormemente su trabajo de “ bartender.” “Trabajas, pero siempre estas en una fiesta.” El hecho de que ella y Chris trabajen juntos casi 20 horas al día no molesta a Raquel. Ella disfruta el poder estar con Chris y también agradece el respaldo de sus compañeros de trabajo, hacia su relación con Chris. “Chris nunca muestra favoritismo hacia mí, así que todo funciona bien,” ella dice.
Mirando hacia el futuro, ambos desean abrir un pequeño restaurante que también sirva de club nocturno. “Hay mucho dinero en Santa Barbara y a las personas les gusta salir y amanecerse. No hay ningún lugar que sirva de comer después de las 10 de la noche,” dice Raquel. “Nosotros queremos cambiar esto.”
Por ahora, la pareja se mantiene ocupada planeando su boda, la cual se llevará a cabo en una mansión en Montecito el 30 de julio. Enterprise Fish Co. estará a cargo de la comida (es un favor para Raquel), amenizarán ocho DJ´s, con una mezcla de música ecléctica. “Tenemos a una persona encargada de la música, pero queríamos que nuestros amigos compartieran y participaran en la ceremonia,” nos informa Raquel. Será una ceremonia no religiosa, aunque Raquel insiste en que sea su padre quien la lleve hasta el altar. “Mi familia es muy sentimental. Todos estarán llorando y sumamante emocionados,” asegura Raquel.
A pesar de no poder esperar que llegue el dia de su boda, cuidar todos los detalles puede ser agotador, admite Raquel, especialmente porque ella y Chris lo están haciendo todo por si mismos. “Yo soy muy relajada y no me gusta planificar. Por suerte, Chris está acostumbrado a coordinar eventos para el club,” dice ella. Raquel ya quisiera poder tomar el apellido de Chris, “Estoy tan entusiasmada que a veces ya hago reservaciones como la Sra. Dixon,” nos dice con una sonrisa. “No puedo esperar para que llegue el día de nuestra boda.”
