Hispano of the Month: Mario Rodriguez

During his 20-year-long career, Countrywide loan consultant Mario Rodriguez has helped more than 3,000 Santa Barbara families finance their home. Here the banker reveals the secrets to shopping for a loan along with his thoughts on Latin family, culture and women.

Tinta Latina: What’s the best part about your job, besides the nice pay check?

Mario Rodriguez: Many of my clients have become great friends. They’re good, hardworking people trying to get ahead. I can relate to that.

TL: Any advice for loan shoppers?

MR: Go with a local, reputable company and a loan agent you trust and who speaks your language. Know that the cheapest rates and terms typically come with hidden fees and end up being more costly in the end.

TL: How do you escape your job responsibilities?

MR: Through golf and traveling. I’m taking my kids to France in a few weeks. Although Cancún is my absolute favorite place to visit. I’ve been there 18 times and hope to buy a second home there some day.

TL: You’re a single father of two teenagers. How do you like parenthood?

MR: I love it. I have an 18-year-old daughter, Ellia, and a 15-year-old son, Devin. They’re the best kids I could ever ask for.

TL: Were you born in town?

MR: I came here from Guadalajara, Jalisco, when I was 11 with my mom, dad, older brother and four sisters.

TL: How has the Hispanic community changed since?

MR: Back then, it wasn’t really a community. Today, Latinos are a driving force.

TL: What was it like growing up surrounded mostly by females?

MR: Tough at times. Our parents both worked so my brother and I had to make sure the girls weren’t getting into trouble. My older sister and I were in a constant battle, but now we laugh about it.

TL: It must have taught you a thing or two about Latinas.
MR: Yeah. That sometimes it’s better to lose an argument.

TL: What attracts you to Hispanic women?

MR: That most Latinas have strong values.

TL: Has a woman ever made you cry?

MR: Yes, but I’m glad it happened. It made me stronger.

TL: What do you like most about Hispanic culture?

MR: I love how family oriented Latinos are, how it’s all about the kids and getting together and enjoying each other’s company.

TL: What’s the best advice your mom ever gave you?

MR: To never give up.

TL: What’s your own life motto?

MR: “It doesn’t matter what happens, it’s what you do about it.”

Tinta Latina: ¿Qué disfrutas más de tu trabajo, aperte de la buena paga?

Mario Rodriguez: Muchos de mis clientes son hoy mis mejores amigos. Son personas buenas y trabajadoras que solamente quieren prosperar. Yo me compenetro mucho con ese ideal.

TL: ¿Algún consejo para los que buscan un buen préstamo?

MR: Sí, que siempre vayan a una compañía establecida, de buena reputación, y donde hablen su idioma. Estén consientes de que las ofertas de tarifas y términos bajos, por lo general contienen gastos escondidos y terminarán costándoles más dinero.

TL: ¿Cómo escapas de tus responsabilidades de trabajo?

MR: A tráves del golf y viajando. Voy a llevar a mis hijos a Francia en unas semanas. Aunque confieso que Cancún es mi lugar favorito para visitar. He ido ya 18 veces y espero comprar una segunda casa ahí algún día

TL: Tu eres padre soltero de dos adolecents. ¿Disfrutas tu papel de papá?

MR: Me encanta. Tengo una hija de 18 años, Ellia, y un hijo de 15 años, Devin. No puedo pedir mejores hijos.

TL: ¿Naciste aquí?

MR: Yo vine aquí de Guadalajara, Jalisco, cuando tenía 11 años, con mi mamá, mi papá, un hermano y cuatro hermanas .

TL: ¿Cómo ha cambiado la comunidad Hispana?

MR: En aquellos tiempos no exsistía una comunidad. Hoy, los latinos somos una gran fuerza económica.

TL: ¿Cuál fue tu experiencia al ser criado entre tantas mujeres?

MR: A veces fue difícil. Nuestros padres trabajaban y era la responsabilidad de mi hermano y yo cuidar y proteger a mis hermanas. Mi hermana mayor y yo siempre estabamos discutiendo, ahora nos reímos al recordar esos tiempos.

TL: Eso seguro que te enseño más de un par de cosas acerca de las latinas.

MR: Sí. Aprendí que a veces es mejor perder la pelea.

TL: ¿Qué te atrae de la mujer hispana?

MR: La mayoría de las latinas tienen valores morales muy fuertes.

TL: ¿Te ha hecho llorar alguna mujer?

MR: Sí, y me alegro que sucediera. Me hizo más fuerte.

TL: ¿Qué es lo que más te agrada de la cultura hispana?

MR: Me gusta que todo es basado en la unión familiar, lo más importante son los hijos y las reunones familiares.

TL: ¿Cuál es el lema de tu vida?

MR: “Lo importante no es lo que pasa, sino lo que tu haces”.
