Spirit of Fiesta

What is Fiesta without the talented young woman dancer chosen to portray the Spirit of Fiesta? She leads the annual parade in a traditional white dress, embodying the essence and vitality of one of Santa Barbara's most famous summer festivals. Spirit of Fiesta has come to represent visually, the iconic meaning of Fiesta, and act as a goodwill ambassador to local residents and visitors alike.

This year, Jessica Márquez has been chosen as the Spirit of Fiesta to lead the parade. She has been dancing for over 16 years and is native to Santa Barbara. Now she is a student at Santa Barbara City College and would like to someday work in business finance and administration.
Spirits didn’t play a central role in Fiestas until 1949. Then, the Spirit of Fiesta began in recognition of Santa Barbara's several dance studios. Young girls of Santa Barbara could display and showcase their talents in Fiesta, encouraging and perpetuating the influence of Spanish/flamenco dance.

And may I remind you why most of us anxiously await Fiesta’s annual return, it is the dancers. Fiesta would be nothing without the dancers. It seems everywhere one turns flamenco dancers are swaying energetically in vibrant costumes, embodying the essence of Fiesta.

With a strong link to traditions of Spain and Old California, Fiesta is a magical event, taking you to another place and time. This 88th Fiesta marks the 35th year that two renowned dancers have been teaching, performing, and keeping the spirit of Fiesta alive in Santa Barbara.

This spring, Rosemarie Cruz, was recognized in a special banquet to honor her more than 35 years of dedication to the art of flamenco and Spanish style dance, which she has shared with countless eager students year after year in Santa Barbara. This year's Spirit of Fiesta was also a student of Ms. Cruz. Look for Jessica and all the talented dancers this August at Fiesta and take a trip back in time to magic Old California.


El Espiritu de Fiesta

¿Que es Fiesta sin las talentosas jóvenes bailarinas elegidas a ser Los Espíritus de Fiesta? Una encabeza las otras en el desfile anual en un vestido blanco y tradicional, cual personifica la esencia y vitalidad de unos de los más famosos eventos de Santa Bárbara. El Espíritu de Fiesta ha llegado a representar visualmente el sentido icónico de Fiesta, y también se porta como una embajadora de benévolo a los residentes y visitantes.
Este año, Jessica Márquez es el Espíritu especial que se va a encabezar el desfile. Ella ha estado bailando desde 16 años y es un nativo de Santa Barbara. Ahora es un estudiante en Santa Barbara City Collage estudiando para hacerse una administradora de negocios.

Los Espíritus no tenían un papel central hasta 1949. El Espíritu empezó reconocimiento de unos de los estudios de baile. Jóvenes mujeres de Santa Bárbara ya pueden mostrar sus talentos en Fiesta, de tal modo fomentando y perpetuando la influencia de bailes de españoles o Flamenco.

Y les puedo recordar porque ustedes esperan tan ansiosamente para el retorno anual: es los bailarines. No seria nada sin los bailarines, Fiesta. Parece por todos lados ven bailarines flamencas como flotan en el aire energéticamente en costumbres vibrantes, llena de la esencia de Fiesta.

Con raíces fuertes a las tradiciones de España y de California antigua, Fiesta es un evento mágico, llevándole a otro lugar y tiempo. Esta ochenta octava Fiesta marca el treinta quinto año de que dos renombrados bailarines han estados enseñando, bailando y continuando el espíritu de Fiesta en vivo.

Esta primavera, Rosémarie Cruz, fue reconocido en un banquete especial para honrar los más de 35 años de dedicación al arte de bailes flamencos o españoles, que ha compartido con incontables estudiantes ansiosas año tras año en Santa Bárbara. Señorita Márquez también fue una estudiante de Señora Cruz. Hay buscarla y a los otros bailarines talentosas en Fiesta y tome un viaje detrás en el tiempo a la mágica California antigua.
