Dear Readers,

During Old Spanish Days Fiesta there are so many things to celebrate, beginning with the parade, dances, food and the streets filled with vibrant colors. On page 10, meet El Presidente Tim Taylor, who assures us all will go well during Fiesta.

I hold dear memories of flamenco. I grew up in Spain dancing and singing every day with my family and friends. So, this part of Fiesta is something very special to me. When I had the opportunity this year to see all the young dancers compete for the Spirit of Fiesta, I almost I began to cry, not of grief but of happiness to see so many talented flamenco artists in Santa Barbara. And they have no reason to envy those from Andalucía, my native land.

Spirit of Fiesta, Jessica Márquez speaks to us on page 11. Page 12 tells the history of Old Spanish Days Fiesta. Nobody experiences Fiesta without hearing good mariachi music. On page 18, we share the story of the mariachi musician.

Congratulations to Farmer Boy, Petrini’s and Pepe’s restaurants for 50 years of hard work, great service and delicious food. Read their story on page 16. My great friend Gordon, of Jeannine's Bakery & Cafe, has returned from Europe with a thousand new ideas for the grand opening of their new downtown location, 15 E. Figueroa St. Read more on page 15. Health is fundamental but so is your appearance. Read how Dr. Joseph Hwang advises to get the best smile on page 23. Everyone, at some time in a relationship, will say that it is not functioning well or there are misunderstandings. Virginia Moreno counsels how to improve relationships on page 22.

Hay tantas cosas que celebrar comenzando con el desfile, bailes, comida y las calles llenas de grandes coloridos.

Ser el presidente de fiestas esta lleno de acontecimientos y responsabilidades en asegurarse que todo sale a medida por favor conozcan a nuestro nuevo presidente de fiesta Tim Taylor, pg. 10. El flamenco le llevo muy dentro de mí. Crecí en mi infancia en España bailando y cantando todos los días ya fuera con mis amigas, en clase o con la familia es algo muy especial para mi. Cuando este año tuve la oportunidad de ver como bailaban todos estos jóvenes para la competición del Espíritu de fiestas casi me pongo a llorar, no de pena si no de alegría de ver que lo bailarines de flamenco aquí en Santa Bárbara no tienen nada que envidiarles a los de (Andalucía) Mi tierra natal.
Nuestro Espíritu de Fiesta Jessica Márquez con su bella manera de bailar deslumbro a todos el día del concurso. Nos dio su tiempo para tomarles fotos y hablarnos un poco de ella, pg. 11.
